FC Barcelona announced the sacking of head coach Xavi Hernández on Friday which stirred a plethora of opinions.
The hierarchy of the Catalan club had initially convinced the Spaniard to stay until the end of his contract in 2025 after he announced his resignation in January but have now fired the 44-year-old ahead of next season – however, he will be in the dugout for their final game of this term against Sevilla on Sunday.
Sevilla gaffer Quique Sanches Flores has now provided his sentiments on the situation, criticizing Barcelona on how they treat the greats of their club.
Flores cited how the Blaugrana giants could not renew the contract of all-time top scorer Lionel Messi due to the club’s poor financial situation and how former player Ronald Koeman was sacked in 2021.
“I shouldn’t say this, but how badly Barcelona treats its legends. What a bad streak,” Flores said to newsmen in his pre-match presser.
“With Koeman, with Messi, with Xavi now, how bad. I wish clubs treated their legends well. That would be fantastic. That is a legacy of connection from the managers to the fans. This connects a lot, treating legends well.
“Xavi is a legend of the club. He won the league last season and football has a short memory. He was questioned this year from the first minute. I have doubts that the criticism about him is correct.”
