Football icon and Argentina caption Lionel Messi is reportedly eyeing a move back to Barcelona, after his career at Inter Miami is done.
The 37-year-old, who arrived at Miami in 2023 after winning the World Cup in 2022, reigned as one of the all time greats of world football after 17 years at Barcelona.
Argentinian journalist and a family friend of Messi, Yanina Latorre, publicly stated that the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner would like to return to Barcelona.
“Messi told me that when he is finished in Miami, where he is happy, he will return to Barcelona,” said Latorre.
The new MLS campaign is set to kickoff at the end of February and close in November — meanwhile Messi’s contract is set to expire in December 2025 and reports have filtered in that the Argentine will prefer to bring a halt to his career there.
Also, Inter Miami wants to renew Messi’s contract with a special option that would allow him play in Europe again in the last months of 2025 and early in 2026 to maintain his fitness level.
Quizzing Messi if he would extend his contract with Miami, the La Albiceleste skipper’s response was; “No, my place is there [at Barcelona]”.
