Finidi George Appointed As Super Eagles Head Coach

The Nigeria Football Federation [NFF] has appointed ex-international Finidi George as the new head coach of the Nigeria’s Senior Male National Team, the Super Eagles.

The board of the NFF confirmed the appointment on Monday after approving the recommendation of its Technical and Development Committee.

George was in charge of the Eagles team during the two international friendly games in March — following the resignation of José Peseiro after a second place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations — having spent a year and eight months as assistant.

The 52-year-old was part of the revered ‘golden generation’, amassing 62 caps for Nigeria and part of the team who conquered Africa in 1994 and won Olympic gold in 1996.

The former Ajax forward made his national debut, scoring against Burkina Faso in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in July 1991. He also played for Calabar Rovers and Sharks FC before moving to Europe.

The immediate task of the Enyimba gaffer will be to lead the Super Eagles to a must-win victory in games against South Africa and Benin Republic in their two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in over a month.

Nigeria are in third place in group C, behind Rwanda and South Africa.
