Olivier Giroud has made known his plan to call time on his international career this summer.
The France striker will make the step once next month’s European Championship comes to a conclusion, admitting he wants to ensure he does not play “one season too many.”
The 37-year-old who joined Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC from AC Milan at the start of May, is the county’s all-time leading has scored 57 goals for the men’s national team, after surpassing Thierry Henry during the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The former Arsenal and Chelsea striker has also featured 131 times for France and was played a crucial role as part of their World Cup winning team in 2018.
In an interview published with L’Equipe, Giroud said:
“To be honest, this will be my last competition with Les Bleus. Obviously, I’m going to miss it a lot.
“But I think the French team will be over after the Euro. We need to make way for the youngsters.
“You also have to be careful not to have one season too many. You have to find the right balance.
“I’ve always said that I was going to stop when my body asked me to. I think I’ve got two good years left. But as far as the French team is concerned, I think that’ll be the end of it.”
