Scotland captain Andy Robertson believes lessons have been learnt while urging his teammates to turn things around as soon as possible following their 5-1 defeat to Germany in the opening game of Euro 2024 on Friday.
The Germans wasted little time in the contest as Florian Wirtz netted inside 10 minutes and Jamal Musiala added a second minutes later.
The Scots were reduced to 10 men after Ryan Porteous was sent off for a bad challenge on captain Ilkay Gundogan inside the penalty area — a resulting spot kick which Kai Havertz converted to give the hosts a commanding lead at halftime.
Niclas Fullkrug smashed home a fourth and Emre Can put the icing on a five-star night for Julian Nagelsmann’s side.
Robertson admitted to and elaborated on the mistakes his team — who got a consolation goal after Fullkrug’s fourth, thanks to Antonio Rudiger’s own goal — made while also pointing out the result was a stark reminder of the difficulty of the competition.
Speaking to ITV, the Liverpool left-back said: “First half, we just got it all wrong really, didn’t show up, weren’t aggressive enough, and we let good players get on the ball.
“Second half, we’re down to 10 men and I thought the lads dug in really well.
“We’re so well backed over here, today was hugely disappointing.
“We have to bounce back quickly because there was lots wrong here and it’s a quick turnaround now. Maybe it’s a reminder of how tough this tournament is.”
