Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has insisted he does not know what the future holds but is solely focused on helping the team under new head coach Arne Slot.
The 33-year-old is has under a year left his in contract at Anfield and a renewal has not yet been seen in the front view of things.
The Dutchman has been integral to the Reds’ success since his then world record move for a defender, when he made the £75million switch in January 2018.
Sunday’s 2-0 triumph over Brentford was his 100th appearance for the Merseyside outfit at Anfield, during which he has suffered only two losses at the famous ground.
“I’m very calm,” Van Dijk spoke to Sky Sports.
“I want to be important and stay important for the club. What happens? Let’s see, but I’m very calm about my situation.
“There’s no reason for me to think about something else because I have the whole season to play.”
Van Dijk has lifted the Champions League, Premier League, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, Club World Cup, and two League Cups in his career at Liverpool.
He is expected to be extremely important to helping his countryman Slot transition his philosophy as he faces the uphill task of successfully building on Jurgen Klopp’s legacy.
“Whatever happens now, Anfield has a special place in my heart. And it’s been successful. Let’s see what happens,” Van Dijk added.
“Playing for Liverpool, one of the most if not the most successful club in the world. It feels great to wear the shirt.
“But there’s so much for the club to improve on, for myself and the team, let’s see what [the season] it brings.”
