Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk provided an update on his contract situation as his current deal ends this season.
The 33-year-old stated that there is “no deadline” with regards to his contract situation at the club.
The Dutchman will be able to negotiate with other clubs from January 1st — and it is understood that his preference remains to Anfield.
“There is no deadline at all. We will see what the future brings. Is there an update? No,” he said to reporters.
Van Dijk is one of three star players, including Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah, whose deals are entering their final months.
Salah moved up to fourth on Liverpool’s all-time list of top scorers, to 229 goals, after his two goals in the 6-3 thrashing of Tottenham on Sunday.
The Egyptian has netted 18 times already this season, including 15 in the Premier League, and has also registered 15 assists.
Salah scored 44 goals in all competitions during his debut season for Liverpool in the 2017-18 campaign.
Van Dijk admits he hopes the 32-year-old attacker can go on to have his best campaign for the club, who sit four points clear at the summit of the Premier League table.
“The numbers speak for themselves,” he said.
“He’s a very special athlete. He’s done amazingly for the club and hopefully he can play his best season ever for the club, stay important with his goals and assists and be clinical.
“He is a professional. We’ve been there, he’s been there, so onto the next [game]. And next season? I don’t know.”
