A high-stakes London derby headlines matchday 11 of the English top-flight, as champions Manchester City aim to avoid four straight losses in all competitions and Ruud van Nistelrooy will be in the dugout for his final game as interim manager of Manchester United — as the 2023-24 Premier League campaign looks to provide more drama and excitement ahead of the upcoming November international break.
Chelsea vs Arsenal – Stamford Bridge (Sunday, November 10, 2024 – 5:30pm WAT)
It has been a while in which the derby between Chelsea and Arsenal provided this much intrigue and anticipation as the London rivals are set to clash at Stamford Bridge in the concluding game of this match weekend.
Both sides are level on points on the table with Enzo Maresca’s side in fourth with a better goals difference, ahead of Mikel Arteta’s team who occupy fifth.
Billed to be title contenders before the start of the season, and hoping to go one better and finally with the Premier League, Arteta’s Gunners will be intent to make a mark against Maresca’s Blues who many did not fancy would have a start to the season, quite like this.
Chelsea have only lost twice this season — both games to the division’s current top two teams — and a loss to Arsenal would seemingly not be a step in the wrong direction against a team who have been regarded as one of the best in the land in the last two seasons, a reputation Maresca is hoping to steer his side to.
Arsenal’s loss to Newcastle United last weekend was bizarre, as their turpsy-turvy start to the season was evident, some could blame injuries, however a return for captain Martin Odegaard in midweek is a welcome boost but that could be damped by news that key midfielder Declan Rice could miss the game due to a foot injury.
Arteta will hope his team can use this game to bounce back as Arsenal are unbeaten in their last six games against Chelsea and Maresca will have his work cut out for him as star player Cole Palmer remains a doubt and the last time the West London outfit defeated their North London rivals at Stamford Bridge was back in August 2018.
Liverpool vs Aston Villa – Anfield (Saturday, November 9, 2024 – 9:00pm)
League leaders Liverpool welcome sixth placed Aston Villa to Anfield in Saturday’s late night kickoff.
Arne Slot could not have dreamed for a better start when he took over from Jurgen Klopp as manager of the Reds and a win against Villa could see the Dutchman head into the international break, leading his side into the festive period as leaders of the pack.
He is the first manager in Premier League history with the most wins after 16 games in charge of an English club — he has won 14.
However, Slot’s only loss this season came at Anfield and with Unai Emery’s Villa side visiting at a down moment, Liverpool have their work cut out.
The Villans have lost three successive games in all competitions, are winless and without a clean sheet in their last four games. Last time out, they were comprehensively beaten by Tottenham Hotspur despite leading at half-time, a defeat which was followed up with an end to their perfect record in the Champions League by Club Brugge.
In stark contrast to Villa’s form, Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 12 games in all competitions, and have recorded three wins on the bounce.
The Anfield crowd will be in full voice as they will fancy their chances against a Villa team which they have not lost to in their last eight outings.
Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester City – Ammex Stadium (Saturday, November 9, 2024 – 6:30pm)
The blue clouds are turning dark for Manchester City. A run of three losses in all competitions was recorded in their 4-1 humbling at Sporting CP in the Champions League in midweek and a visit to Fabian Hurzeler’s Brighton & Hove Albion could not come at a more difficult time.
Brighton have already picked up points against the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United this season, although their inconsistency could present a chance for City to pick at.
The Seagulls are also winless in their last three games and will hope their six-game winless run against the league champions does not affect their hopes of what could be a famous scalp.
Pep Guardiola’s need goals. Missing a penalty in midweek, Erling Haaland has been somewhat rusty since his imperious start to the season as City have scored just one each in their last three games — however, Brighton’s failure to keep a clean sheet in their last 16 games against them is worth capitalising on, come Saturday’s tea time kickoff.
Nottingham Forest vs Newcastle United – City Ground (Sunday, November 10, 2024 – 3:00pm)
If at the start of the season, Nottingham Forest fans were told they would be sitting third on the log and six points behind first heading into matchday 11, it would be seen as a weird dream.
That dream is however, a reality as they host Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United on Sunday.
Fresh off winning the manager and player of the month for October, Nuno Espirito Santo and Chris Wood have aided Forest’s surprising start to the campaign.
They are however four points adrift of their 11th-placed opponents, which shows how things are tight in the league.
Forest are on a three-game winning streak and have not lost in their last four games, however, they are without a clean sheet in their last 11 games against Newcastle.
Manchester United vs Leicester City – Old Trafford (Sunday, November 10, 2024 – 3:00pm)
Ruud van Nistelrooy could bid goodbye to Old Trafford fans as his last game in charge as Manchester United interim manager will be a repeat of his first.
Van Nistelrooy and United enjoyed a 5-2 win in the EFL Cup against Leicester City, just less than two weeks ago — however, the Foxes will be out revenge and also to end the Red Devils legend’s short reign on a sour note.
A first win in Europe in over a year on Thursday extended Man United’s unbeaten run to three games, meanwhile, Steve Cooper’s side are winless in the same amount of games.
While United are unbeaten in four games against Leicester, winning their last three, they have also scored in each of their last 20 games against Sunday’s opponents. They will look for more of the same as the Manchester faithful look to kickstart the welcome party for incoming new manager Ruben Amorim.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Ipswich Town – Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (Sunday, November 10, 2024 – 3:00pm)
Seventh-placed Tottenham Hotspur will face Ipswich Town as they look to put their European disappointment behind them.
Ange Postecoglu’s Spurs are yet to make their mark this season with inconsistency been the headline title of their current campaign.
Ipswich on the other hand sit 18th with just points amassed this season, and are the only team alongside Wolverhampton Wanderers yet to record a win this season.
Kieran McKenna’s side have not recorded a win in their last 11 games, however, a win against Tottenham would be a famous opportunity — as the last time these sides met was way back in January 2002, with Ipswich recording a 2-1 win.
Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Southampton – Molineux (Saturday, November 9, 2024 – 4:00pm)
It is a relegation six-pointer and a must win game for both Wolverhampton Wanderers and Southampton when both sides lock horns on Saturday.
A point and a place separate both sides as Wolves are rooted to the bottom of the table with three points and no single win yet this season, while Southampton are 19th with just one win and a draw in 10 games, registering just four points.
Wolves manager Gary O’Neil could be in danger of a sack if maximum points are not gotten from Saturday’s home game as his team are winless and without a clean sheet in their last nine games.
Although, a positive for them and a bad omen for the Saints is that Wolves have beaten their opponents in their last five meetings.
Fresh off their elations in their late comeback win on Monday, Fulham gear up for another London derby as they travel to Crystal Palace, as Brentford look to bounce back from that derby loss when they host Bournemouth who are riding last week’s big win against Man City and West Ham United welcome Everton to the London Stadium in a game where both sides are aiming to put their respective poor starts behind them.
