Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglu has insisted that his side must work towards building long-term consistency in order to reach their ultimate goal of winning the Premier League title.
The Australian expressed his sentiments ahead of Saturday’s clash with Newcastle United.
In his first season in charge, Spurs are actively involved in the race for Champions League football, however, Postecoglu remains adamant that his aim is to reach the level of fighting for the Premier League title.
Spurs have been on a 16-year trophy drought since last winning the League Cup in 2008 and the last time they won the league was back in 1961.
After finishing third in the 2015-16 season and second in 2016-17, the North London side lost their first UEFA Champions League final to Liverpool in 2019, that was before finishing third in the league in 2018.
“Look, you try and win every competition you’re in,” Postecoglou spoke to TNT Sports in an interview.
“But ultimately for me, it’s about trying to make this club champion of the Premier League.
“That’s got to be the ultimate goal. It’s not easy, you’re competing against some top clubs that have been at this a lot longer… so we’ve got a bit of catching up to do.
“The most challenging bit is to get to where they are on a consistent basis. In a one-off year, maybe you could do it. But a consistent basis is where we should try and pitch ourselves.”
Spurs are currently in fourth place and have picked up 60 points. They are level on points with fifth-placed Aston Villa but they do have a game in hand.
