West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paquetá has been charged by the English FA with misconduct in relation to alleged breaches of FA Rules E5 and F3.
The Brazilian is the next Premier League player who has now faced similar charge from England’s football governing body.
Brentford captain Ivan Toney returned early this year after a ban from football in relation to betting breaches.
Meanwhile, Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali is also currently serving a suspension in relation to an identical case.
A statement from the FA’s read:
“It’s alleged that Lucas directly sought to influence the progress, conduct, or occurrence in these matches by intentionally seeking to receive a card from the referee for the improper purpose of affecting betting market in order for one or more persons to profit from betting”.
The Brazilian has also been charged with two breaches of FA Rule F3 in respect of alleged failures to comply pursuant to FA Rule F2.
Paquetá has until June 3, 2024 to provide a response.
In a response to the development, the former Olympique Lyon man said.
“I’m extremely surprised and upset to see that the FA have decided to charge me.
“For nine months, I’ve cooperated with every step of their investigation and provided all the information I can.
“I deny the charges in their entirety and will fight with every breath to clear my name.
“Due to the ongoing process, I will not provide any further comment.”
