Paul Onuachu is brimming confidence ahead of the Super Eagles’ FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifier against Benin Republic on Monday.
The Nigeria striker has also voiced his pleasure at reunion with former coach Gernot Rohr.
Nigeria’s 1-1 draw at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo against South Africa was their third successive share of the spoils in group C of the 2026 qualifying series.
Finidi George and his charges will now attempt to use Monday’s game to bounce at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Ivory Coast, to bounce back — a tie which they are seen as favourites to win.
Looking forward to the clash against Benin, Onuachu, who started the game against South Africa expressed his delight to meeting Rohr – who gave him his Super Eagles debut in 2019.
“It will be good to see him again and say hello because he gave me my first call-up. I thank him for that and I appreciate him. But that doesn’t stop us from going there and beat him,” Onuachu said to Nigerian journalist Modo Victor.
Gernot Rohr was Nigeria’s gaffer from 2016, before he was fired in 2021.
Nigeria are placed fifth among the six teams in Group C. The group winners are to automatically book their place in the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States while the four best-ranked runners-up go into play-offs and winners enter an inter-continental tournament where six nations will compete for two places.
