Portugal coach Roberto Martinez voiced his dissatisfaction with the attitude of spectators invading the pitch to meet Cristiano Ronaldo.
The gaffer expressed his concern about security after several supporters made their way to the field to request for a photo with the superstar in Portugal’s 3-0 triumph against Turkey.
The 39-year-old eventually posed for a selfie with a young boy with 20 minutes left on the clock — and five others came on to the turf to also get pictures which made Ronaldo cut a frustrated figure.
Claiming the man of the match award, Bernardo Silva waved away the incidents, admitting it was “the price we pay for being so recognised in the world of football and having a player like him with us.”
However, Martinez was not having any of it, saying pitch invasions leaves the players exposed and should be prevented by security staff.
“It’s a concern because today we were lucky that the intentions of the fans were good,” he said to reporters.
“I think we all love a fan that recognises that big star and the big icons… but you can understand that there is a very, very difficult moment if those intentions are wrong.”
