Manchester City and manager Pep Guardiola have had a nightmare season, which continued in Europe in midweek and as they prepare to welcome Newcastle United to the Etihad this weekend, their injury woes have not ceased with Manuel Akanji joining the sidelines.

The Cityzens lost 3-2 to Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, in yet another collapse in a miserable season so far. Both City and Newcastle are level on 41 points and are fighting for a top four place, meaning this weekend’s game is a huge clash for both sides.

Speaking to the media ahead of the contest, Guardiola first revealed Manuel Akanji’s injury is set to rule his out for “eight to 10 weeks”.

“He will have surgery on Saturday and eight-10 weeks out. It’s an adductor injury.

“I just wish him a speedy recovery because the effort he has put in this season has been unbelievable. Him and Nathan [Ake] have played in difficult positions.

“There has been a lack of players in that position and his body has said enough is enough.”

The Spaniard then commented on how hard it is to lift the spirits of his players after what was a disastrous first leg against Madrid.

“We’ve recovered and move forward. The next hours and day after are difficult. But they have to be better.”

Next, he spoke on Newcastle’s superb form which could help them leapfrog City this weekend, if they pick up a win.

“They always have been [a difficult side] since Eddie Howe took over. They have good form and unbelievable pace. It’s a credit to them.

“We have made some steps backwards compared to the progress made in previous seasons, but we are at home with our people so we will try to do it [win].”
