Manchester City’s Jack Grealish, Manchester United’s Harry Maguire and Tottenham Hotspur’s James Maddison have all been excluded from Gareth Southgate’s Engand squad for the European Championship in Germany.
Southgate selected his final 26-man list on Thursday as Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze and Adam Wharton both made the final cut.
Grealish and Maguire – who were both key figures in previous tournaments – were cut alongside Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah and Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite.
It was also announced earlier in the day that James Maddison and Liverpool’s Curtis Jones had both left the training camp.
Grealish’s unstable form with Manchester City played a big role in his omission as he recorded just three goals in 36 appearances across all competitions.
Meanwhile, Maguire who gas been a regular for Southgate, has been nursing a calf injury since April which raised concerns about his fitness.
The 31-year-old responded to the confirmation of him not making the squad via social media, saying he was “devastated”.
Maguire wrote: “I am devastated not to have been selected to play for England at the Euros this summer.
“Despite my best efforts, I have not been able to overcome an injury to my calf. Maybe I pushed myself too hard, to try and make it. Simply, I am absolutely gutted.
“For me, representing England is the highest honour. It means everything to me. If I can’t help the team as a player, I will support them as a fan – along with the rest of the country. Go and win it boys.
“Next, I will return to the supervision of the Manchester United medical team in order to prepare for next season.”
The news of the final Euro squad means places for players who have not featured at international tournaments like, Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa, Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo as well as Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze and Adam Wharton.
England’s first outing is a game against Serbia on June 16th.
The Three Lions will also face Iceland in their final warm-up game at Wembley on Friday evening.
