Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has given his opinion on the contract situation involving Mohamed Salah, revealing he is “hopeful” that the Egyptian will sign a new deal to remain at the club.
Praising the 32-year-old as the best striker the Merseyside outfit have had in recent times, Salah’s current contract is set to run out at the end of the season and the forward recently made it known that a new deal is “far away” from finalisation.
Been at the Reds dugout when Salah signed for the club from Roma in 2017, Klopp has moved to a rather different role as Red Bull’s global head of soccer.
However, quizzed about the situation of Liverpool in his first official press conference, Klopp shared his sentiments.
“I hope he stays – he’s the biggest striker Liverpool had in modern times.
“Obviously, they had other good strikers, really good strikers. But fantastic player, fantastic human being, outstanding athlete, the best ambassador your country [Egypt] could have.
“He’s fantastic in all departments, so I hope he will stay at Liverpool.”
Salah made an instant impact upon his return to England, having endured a torrid spell at Chelsea under Jose Mourinho seasons prior as scored an impressive 44 goals across all competitions in his debut season at Anfield.
Klopp and Salah went on to enjoy significant success together, winning numerous trophies, including the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, Club World Cup and League Cup.
It is also worthy to note that, no player throughout Klopp’s entire managerial career has scored more goals [211] or provided more assists [88] than Salah.
This term, the world-renowned attacker has been fantastic once again under new boss Arne Slot, with his 18 goals and 13 assists in 19 Premier League appearances firing Liverpool to a seemingly comfortable lead at the top of the table. He is also the current leading goalscorer.
Speaking to Sky Sport earlier in January, Salah admitted that he “really wanted to win the Premier League” and suggested it was his last year with the club.
