England captain Harry Kane believes the team can make history due to the extreme desire to make amends after their loss in the Euro 2020 final to Italy.
The Three Lions begin their quest to win their first major international title since 1966 – as they face Serbia in their first game of the 2024 European Championship against Serbia on Sunday.
Speaking to Spiegel, a German magazine, in an interview — “I’m not saying we’ll definitely win the tournament, but we have a really good chance.”
The 30-year-old netted 44 times in 45 appearances across all competitions for Bayern Munich and will lead England to a tournament he can consider a feel right at home.
Last summer, Kane — who secured a transfer to the German Bundesliga from boyhood club Tottenham Hotspur — admitted the England group’s intent to rewrite their past disappointments in tournaments.
“In England’s history we’ve struggled to get across the finish line at major tournaments,” Kane said.
“We were as close to the title you can get without winning it. Now I feel like this team is extremely hungry.
“We want to make history and the only way to do that is to win the title.”
Despite a goals filled individual career, England’s all-time top goal scorer has never won a team trophy. Record Bundesliga winners Bayern also finished last season trophyless for the first time in 12 years.
“If you look at my career and the doubts that have accompanied me, that’d be a great way to make a point,” Kane added.
Kane is also bent on making amends after missing a crucial penalty in a 2-1 2022 FIFA World Cup quarter-final loss to France in Qatar.
“It still hurts and I know that pain will probably never go away,” Kane continued.
“I completely withdrew and just spent time with my family. If I had started reading every headline or scrolling through Instagram and Twitter, I would have gone crazy.”
