The 2023-24 Premier League campaign entered matchday 13 as league leaders Liverpool overcame champions Manchester City who suffered their fourth consecutive defeat in the league.

The Reds extended their lead at the top to nine points, ahead of the chasing pack, thanks to goals in each half from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah.

The results sees Pep Guardiola’s champions sit 11 points adrift the top spot as they sit fifth in the league with 23 points.

Arsenal jumped to second following their 5-2 London derby triumph at West Ham United — with all seven goals in the contest amazingly scored in the first half.

The Gunners were in cruise control with a four-goal lead inside 36 minutes after goals from Gabriel Magalhaes, Leandro Trossard, Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz.

The Hammers though, pulled two back in as many minutes following goals from Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Emerson Palmieri.

However, Bukayo Saka ensured there was no way back with a penalty converted in first half stoppage time.

Chelsea are third, level on points with Arsenal and with the same goals difference, only separated by alphabetical order after their 3-0 win against 12th placed Aston Villa.

Goals from Enzo Fernandez, Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer were enough for the Blues to end the contest with maximum points secured.

Brighton and Hove Albion are fourth after being held to a 1-1 draw by bottom club Southampton.

Kaoru Mitoma’s goal, a minute before the half hour put the Seagulls ahead but Flynn Downes levelled matters just before the hour mark and the Saints thought they would leave with all points but Cameron Archer’s 68th minute strike was ruled out by a lengthy VAR check.

Nottingham Forest are sixth with 22 points after Chris Wood’s penalty handed them a 1-0 victory over Ipswich Town at City Ground on Saturday.

Seventh-placed Tottenham Hotspur were held to a 1-1 draw by Fulham in Sunday’s London derby.

Brennan Johnson put Spurs ahead on 54 minutes but Tom Cairney equalised in the 67th minute but he then left his team with a numerical disadvantage as he was sent off in the 83rd minute.

Brentford are eighth, level with 20 points as Spurs, following their emphatic come from behind 4-1 win over Leicester City.

Kevin Schade netted a hat-trick and Yoane Wissa was also on the scoresheet against the Foxes – who got their solitary goal through Facundo Buonanotte’s opener and had new manager Ruud van Nistelrooy watching in the stands.

Manchester United are up to ninth following their 4-0 win over Everton at Old Trafford.

A brace each from Joshua Zirkzee and Marcus Rashford was enough for Ruben Amorim to record an superb first home win in the dugout as the Red Devils gaffer.

Newcastle United dropped out of the top half after the 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace and pressure resumed for Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Gary O’Neil after the side’s 4-2 loss against AFC Bournemouth.
