Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of Ruben Amorim as the successor of Erik ten Hag and new manager of the club.

Although, Amorim will take over on November 11, with current interim coach Ruud van Nistelrooy to be in charge till that time.

The Red Devils have secured the 39-year-old on a contract until 2027 — after paying the €10 million termination clause and a €1 million compensation for the failure to fulfill the 39-day notice to activate the clause.

Joining Amorim on the job from Lisbon to Manchester are his coaching staff; Emmanuel Ferro, Adelio Candido, Carlos Fernandes and Jorge Vidal – as well as Paulo Barreira, a sports scientist.

Amorim will continue to lead Sporting in their next games against Estrela da Amadora and SC Braga in the Portuguese league and a Champions League clash against United’s neighbours and rivals, Manchester City — as he will complete his move after the November international break, with Sporting’s B team coach, Joao Pereira as his successor in Alvalade.

Amorim has won two league titles, two cups and the Super Cup in his time spent at Sporting since 2020-21, after previous spells with Belenenses, Benfica and SC Braga, as this will be his first job outside his native land.

Sporting revealed in a statement:

“Sporting has reached an agreement with Manchester United FC regarding the terms and conditions of the departure of coach Ruben Amorim, in return for which MUFC will pay Sporting 11,000,000 euros.

“In addition, Sporting SAD will have a benefit of Euro 1,658,000, relating to the cancellation of credit rights, recorded as liabilities and contingent liabilities, as a result of the revocation and renegotiation of contracts relating to intermediation commissions.”

Speaking of their new gaffer, Man United said of Amorim;

“Ruben is one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football. Highly decorated as both a player and coach, his titles include winning the Primeira Liga twice in Portugal with Sporting CP; the first of which was the club’s first title in 19 years.”

At Old Trafford, Amorim will be tasked with taking charge of a giant of the game in disarray. Without winning the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, United have had a disappointing start to the current season.

Sitting 14th in the Premier League with 11 points (12 behind leaders Manchester City), United have just three points in the Europa League group stage (as a result of three draws) but have qualified for the quarter-final stage of the League Cup.

Amorim’s debut is expected to come in the league game at Ipswich Town, with his first game at Old Trafford scheduled in the Europa League against Bodo/Glimt on November 28.
